Young people need mentors. They need adults in their lives who exemplify what it means to be Catholic in our modern world and who are willing to accompany them on their walk of faith.
In his exhortation
Christus Vivit, Pope Francis writes that
young people are in need of Christian mentors and describes this type of person to be:
“A faithful Christian who engages with the Church and the world; someone who constantly seeks holiness; someone who is a confidant without judgement. Similarly, someone who actively listens to the needs of young people and responds in kind; someone deeply loving and self-aware; someone who recognizes his or her limits and knows the joys and sorrows of the spiritual journey. An especially important quality in mentors is the acknowledgement of their own humanity — the fact that they are human beings who make mistakes: not perfect people but forgiven sinners” (240).
This is no small order or easy task, but it is absolutely essential. We are gathering a Core Team of adults of all ages who will work together as a community to lead our young people to a personal relationship with Jesus and ownership of their faith. Young people need adult mentors in their lives who know how to walk alongside them as their faith flourishes and grows. Training is provided!
